What Is the Soccer Roster Matrix?
The Roster Matrix is a chart used to determine the minimum and maximum number of players allowed on a team for each age division during a specific soccer season.
This helps SCCYSA build teams consistently and ensures roster sizes are appropriate for each division of play.
For example, teams may be grouped into divisions such as U4, U6, U8, U10, U12, U14, and U15–U19. The “U” stands for Under, meaning the team is made up of players who fall within that age group for the designated soccer year.
Why It Matters
The Roster Matrix helps SCCYSA:
- Build teams with appropriate roster sizes
- Maintain balanced and age-appropriate competition
- Support the roster-building process for league-formed teams
- Provide clear guidelines for pre-formed and closed-roster teams
- Ensure a fair and consistent playing experience for all participants
How to Use the Roster Matrix
To use the Roster Matrix, locate your team’s age division on the current matrix (see below). That division will show the minimum and maximum number of players allowed on the roster.
SCCYSA generally builds teams based on individual player registrations (pool players), but pre-formed teams are welcome to register. Pre-formed teams are considered closed rosters, which means SCCYSA does not add pool players to those teams.
Closed-roster teams must submit roster information — including player names, player dates of birth, and uniform information if applicable — by email to SCCYSA immediately and prior to the team placement guarantee date, since team building begins as soon as coaches register for the season.
Please note that all closed-roster teams are responsible for maintaining their roster sizes, as pool players will not be added. Be sure to use the Roster Matrix to confirm your team meets the roster size requirements for its division.
Questions About Rosters?
If you are unsure about your team’s roster size requirements or have questions about the closed roster process, please review the current Roster Matrix or contact SCCYSA for assistance before completing registration.
